Summer Opportunities for High School Students
This is a limited listing of summer enrichment opportunities. Our goal is to provide you with information on existing programs that we are aware of and perhaps these ideas can help start your search for a great summer experience. The programs below range from being cost free to several thousand dollars. Volunteering your time through agencies in the community and summer employment are also very valuable experiences.
CATS Encourages Students to Apply for Youth Summit in Washington, DC
Charlotte, N.C., April 5, 2013 – The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has announced that it is taking applications through April 22 for the Generation Green on Board: A Youth Summit to Advance Public Transportation. The third annual summit will take place in Washington, DC from June 23-27and offer participants five days in the nation’s capital to learn first-hand the impact public transportation can have on their lives and the greater community. Summit participants will meet with lawmakers, leaders and industry professionals. They will also participate in hands-on local transit tours and discover the wide range of exciting career paths in the transit industry.
To qualify for this all-expenses-paid summit, you must be a high school junior or senior in the 2012-2013 school years. The Shelton Leadership Challenge at NC State University
The Shelton Challenge is a one-week summer experience for rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school located at 4 different universities. Shelton’s cornerstones of values based leadership – honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity, and social responsibility – are the foundations of the experience. Participants must have least a 3.0 GPA. There is cost of $575.00, which includes deposit, lodging, meals, and program curriculum. $100.00 deposit towards the total fee is non-refundable after the application deadline. The Governor's Page Program, a year-round program, provides an opportunity for high school students to spend a week in Raleigh and learn about the roles and functions of state government. Each week, Pages are assigned to a cabinet level agency or Council of State office within the state government complex to assist employees with various tasks. In addition to their daily responsibilities, Pages will have the opportunity to meet the Governor; attend press conferences; participate in service projects, and tour historic landmarks including the State Capitol, Legislative Building, Executive Mansion, Supreme Court and the NC Correctional Institute for Women.

Forensic Science Camp at Appalachian State University
You have all seen the popular TV show CSI, but have you ever wondered what really happens to the evidence collected from the real crime scene? Where does it go, how does it tell its story, and most importantly, how can it be used to solve the crime? With ASU's Forensic Science Camp, all of these questions will be answered. You will get the opportunity to investigate a suspicious arson, detect and classify fingerprints, identify unknown drugs, compare trace evidence using a microscope, and detect gunshot residue just like professional investigators. 2013 camp dates are July 10-13 or July 24-27.

Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Young Artists at Sweet Briar http://sbc.edu/blur
The Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Young Artists is a three-week camp for high school students interested in making art that challenges old ideas about what art is and what it isn’t. The camp is located on Sweet Briar College’s 3,250-acre campus, which is nestle in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Why “Blur”? Because the program is designed for you to work deeply within your own art form — creative writing, theater or visual art — collaborating with artists in other fields, blurring the boundaries between the arts to imagine new ways of seeing, thinking, and creating.

The Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge (FELC) is a five-day summer program for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The goal of FELC is to educate students about entrepreneurship and free market economics. The registration fee for accepted students is $100 and that covers all meals, activities and board for the week. The FELC is the flagship program of the Jesse Helms Center Foundation in Wingate, NC. Two leading organizations - the Center for the Environment at Catawba College and Rocky Mountain Institute - are partnering to provide an opportunity for young environmental leaders to learn, create, share, interact, grow, connect, and build relationships.
